The failure of MARID was entirely legal and political.  At the time the 
working group was summarily closed there weren't major technical issues left 
to resolve.  When you try to mix two groups of people, one almost exclusively 
from a free software/open source background with a large corporation that 
insists on patent licenses that are incompatible with free software/open 
source no amount of wrangling is going to save it.
