Jason,

I don’t think the employment mechanism matters either, so I agree with you in principle.

However, statements to the effect of “Oh, s[h]e is just a contractor!” have apparently
been uttered in the broader context of the IETF and the various roles we have
been discussing on this list (not just the RSE). That might be reflective of
attitudes that do not serve us well in the long run, and lead us to consider
these roles in a different light.
