I agree.  However, eliminating non-living languages from a listing of
languages indigenous to the U.S. (according to Ethnologue) reduces the
list from 238 to 162, a 32% reduction.

Using the Ethnologue "nearly extinct" category allows a further reduction
to only 92 languages, a full 62% reduction.  Unfortunately, 639-3 does
not use this type.

Peter C, could you enlighten us on what the language type information
in 639-3 is intended for?
