GOES machines read your passport and fingerprints at US ports of entry, so 
you need to get your fingerprints scanned.  If you already have NEXUS, you 
need to have an interview at a GOES enrollment center at a US airport but 
it's free and very quick.

The benefit is that there are GOES machines at many US airports, but NEXUS 
machines only at Canadian airports.
