The CBP people told me the point of the GE card is for land and sea entry,
where they don't have kiosks.
I don't think it replaces a passport, so it does not seem so useful.

I got GE before NEXUS because it was so much easier for me to get GE.  The
local airport (SFO) can do GE, but I had to schedule a border office for
the NEXUS interview - Vancouver was booking 9 weeks in advance - took me 6
months after approval to book a business trip and NEXUS interview
appointment at the same time. Not $$$ optimized, but $100+$50 is worth the
time not spent in lines.  I've found having both to be useful.
