I was told that it's for "supplemental" identification, i.e., if someone
doesn't believe you have GE.

One more tangible benefit (that I discovered on this trip) is that the
card carries the ID# you need to provide to your airline in order access
the TSA Pre line. See http://www.tsa.gov/what_we_do/participation.shtm.
