It's wacky. Some weeks ago (nanog55) I was flying out on a 6pm united flight. Checked in online. Get there at 4:50. 

Go to security, they say I need a hard copy of my boarding pass. My phone pass would no work.

Go back to the united kiosks, but now it's 5:05 and even though I am already Checked in, they will NOT print a boarding pass since its less than 60min till my flight.

And between 4: 50 and 5:05, ALL the united people _fled_ the building. Counter is a ghost town.

Called United Premium support, "sorry sir, you need to talk to someone there. If there are no united reps maybe you can ask Air Canada to help"

BUT this was a pure united ticket, so air Canada couldn't print it out.

If Air Canada had not spent 20min on the phone, checked me off that flight and use the tag to issue me a ticket on a later air Canada flight I would have been stuck there overnight with no hotel.

It's easier to fly from Amsterdam->US than Canada->US
