I don't want to get too far down this particular rathole, but in my
experience a lot of those organizations do have a significant
component of their interactions at conventions/conferences.  (Not in
the sense that total time is spent there, but that key interactions
occur there.) Most organizations (probably even Anonymous) sit
somewhere on a spectrum between face-to-face and online interactions.
 I'd rather not build a taxonomy, though.
