ditto. One of the really good things about it is a specific effort to bring new people into the community. The leadership is important, but so is the followership. I use it to meet newcomers (it used to be ones I was mentoring, but that program is no more I'm told) and introduce them to the leadership in working/research groups they are interested in. Absent some means of that, I'm pretty sure newcomers are lost in the hubbub of the meeting, and might never feel empowered to contribute.

The fact that there is a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven is an interesting comment on projected traffic volume...
