If thats the goal, center the conference where lots of attendees live  
in any geographic area, so, eg, if in the US, stick to Silicon Valley  
and Seattle, Washington, because in-town attendees can commute and out- 
of-town attendees are more likely to have friends in the industry.

You can cut your attendence bill by a good 30%+ for a conference by  
staying with a friend or relative, and the company is better anyway.
