I suspect the difference between Mary's and Dean's positions has a lot  
to do with whether one is getting reimbursed for expenses. Although I  
personally do get reimbursed (at the moment, anyway), I think we  
should try very hard to avoid making choices that discourage  
contribution from people who don't have that advantage.

We have the fee discount for students, but that's only a small piece  
of the total cost--and it doesn't help self-employed people, or people  
whose employers won't pay to send them to meetings.
