I don't think this is true flying from Europe.

The cheapest flight from Madrid to San Francisco for the next IETF
flying both ways on saturday is 514 pounds on amadeus.net on the first
page, 609 of the fifth and 676 on the tenth.

For Minneapolis this is 560 / 568 / 603.

 From Amsterdam, SFO: 471 / 572 / 590, MSP: 450 / 505 / 595

London, SFO: 386 / 440 / 451, MSP: 477 / 527 / 548

Helsinki, SFO: 583 / 639 / 738, MSP: 595 / 714 / 891

So only for London there is a real difference.
