I think these situations are very much YMMV. For me flying from DFW to
Vancouver, my airfare by going through Seattle (and staying there two
days for other business), was cheaper than flying direct from DFW to
Vancouver (seems to be the common theme). BUT, for me to take the rental
car over the border was going to cost over $300 extra, so the fly-drive
approach doesn't work for everyone. Although, I guess we could
coordinate with local Seattle folks and share the cost of driving. And,
of course, I could drive my minivan from Dallas with 6 other Dallas area
IETF attendees and share the driving and drive straight through to any
major U.S. city and actually to most Canadian destinations for that
matter.

So, yes, overall we can certainly arrange more cost effective
approaches, but the end savings for these various things ends up in the
+/- several hundred dollar range depending upon the target country for
folks coming from specific areas. So, I personally, don't think the
choice of a meeting site is that big of a deal within a specific region.
For those of us in North America, I fully agree we get the lowest cost
overall since far more meetings over the past decade have been in NA.

Mary.

The same is frequently true inside the US, and I went to one Vancouver
IETF by driving from Seattle.
