As long as a mapping mechanism exists that maps my name in people's
address books to a technology that makes my device ring, I do not need
a "phone number".

Your argument sounds convincing, but is cementing the wrong thing - humans
do not want to talk to numbers, but to other humans.  That's a good
identifier - "Aunt Mary".

A phone number (or IMEI...) is more of a locator.
