I dunno. I've found that train <-> plane changes at Philadelphia are a
lot less hassle than plane <-> plane. Because of where I live, about half
of the flights to anywhere go via PHL, and despite trying to leave a whole
lot of time between flights, e.g. three hours on the way back from Quebec,
I've been stuck overnight two out of the last four times I've gone through
there. The trains to and from PHL run on time, and if your plane is late,
you just take a later one. Ditto EWR.

It seems to me that what is most needed is good local advice about
connections. For example, it clearly would have been useful for people to
learn earlier that the rail connections from BRU to Maastricht are lousy,
while the bus connections from YUL to Quebec are good, and (despite some
uninformed assertions by people who've never been there) the area around
the Quebec train and bus station is safe even late at night.

R's,
John
