For the record, I didn't get to go on my bike trip, and it's not why I think QC was a good venue. I much prefer biking at home—there's more shade, and less traffic. I brought my bike because I wanted to get exercise while I was at IETF, not because I was looking forward to a special treat.

I think QC was a good venue because I could get good food, the conference center was convenient, and it was easy for me to get to. I tend to agree that it would be better if IETF chose a few places and stuck with them, but I'd rather they were places with easy access to restaurants, and of course there's the issue of fairness, which I think is the real driver for what you are perceiving as the "tourist" imperative.

How we wound up back in Disney world is, however, a complete mystery to me, although I'm sure there's a logical explanation.
