I agree 100 %.

Quite unsuccessful, in the technical environment (both in work and in
education). When I talk about IT-related stuff in french, I often have
to use the english word because listeners were baffled by the french
word I used.

A lot of FUD have circulated about that so let's make things straight:

* The "Commission d'enrichissement de la langue française"
<http://www.culture.fr/franceterme> is indeed a government body but
its output is non-binding for ordinary citizens and organisations. (It
is mandatory for official text.)

* "Académie française" <http://www.académie-française.fr/> (hello to
RFC 5891), is not really a "governement body" and, anyway, whatever
they produce is also non-binding.
